When to do remates in Tangos por fiesta

Last week, a student asked an excellent question in class about whether you would add more remates throughout the letra por tangos or whether it’s better to simply mark in a softer way. This is actually quite a complex topic—probably best explored in your solos and in the tablao program.

The short answer is yes, you can add remates, but they should always enhance the sound and musicality of the piece. That’s my personal preference, and it’s also the opinion of most experienced teachers. This ties into a concept referred to as soniquete—the quality of the sound, with some sounds being softer and others more forceful, depending on the phrasing and energy.

On a related note, dancers in the tablao program can develop much more complex and intricate choreographies with their own personal flair and styling. This also includes detailed work on body lines, arm styling, and overall stage presence. And how to rematar with the cante! Which requires you knowing the song quite well and is a matter musical sensitivity.
